a new pet

the other evening we made the dreaded trip to Walmart… we’ve been super targeting it since our move back from nyc, because Walmart is the worst ever. Period.
while we meandered around the isles we happened upon the fish area.
that’s when it was settled; mares needed a pet.
her first teeny pet.
at a staggering 28 cents a piece we really couldn’t help ourselves.
goldfish became her initiation animals.
at that price dale decided that one wasn’t enough- but six would suffice.
so we gathered up 6 goldfish- a baby one, a couple classic gold ones, a couple spotted ones, and a brown one just for mix-up measures.
mary was pumped up for her new life caring responsibilities.
ecstatic would barely begin to describe her feeling.
she lost one that first day.
the baby goldfish couldn’t handle being cared for by a baby.
day 3 another one met the porcelain.
by mid first week mary had already eaten her fair share of fish food.
not only had she partaken but she had filled her new aquatic friends tank clear full.
her desire to take care of them outweighed her ability to see the danger in overfeeding.
by day 5 her enamored disposition for her new pets had dissipated.
she only chanted fish in excitement maybe once, if we were lucky twice a day.
i had been pondering a pet upgrade a few days prior.
perhaps the upgrade was mostly for me, using mary as an excuse.
to fuel this new found pet purchasing desire we took a trip to the pet store a few blocks from our house.
perhaps in the near future we will acquire a crab, some exotic fish, and if I’m lucky a turtle.
before we get too crazy with our pet pursuits we are going to get a tank we have in storage to aid in our endeavors.
so began mary’s experience with the pet world.
i’ve always had a love for pets.
my pet repertoire:
goldfish…
a cat
hamsters
gerbils
frogs
a toad
horny toads
salamanders
dogs
box turtle
water turtles
water dogs
bunnies
thus ensues the parental indoctrination of pet love at the wee age of 2.
take luck mary.
