the festival of trees
people bring in trees of all sizes, gingerbread houses, quilts, wreaths, centerpieces, and other goods.
they donate each of these items and then donors bid.
people can also go and look at all the donated holiday cheer for a small fee- and purchase some treats while they are at it.
every single penny goes to primary children's hospital.
every penny.
when my brother was a small boy he spent way to much time at primary children's.
he was a repeat guest.
having one arm- and then all the lovely things that come with such a situation made him visit this lovely hospital more than any mother would want a child to.
on the other hand, if a kid is going to be at any hospital- there's none finer.
in light of this life situation porter (my brother) and his wife carlie decided to donate a tree to the festival last year.
they continued the tradition this year.
this years tree was in honor of her father- who fought and defeated cancer last year.
a blue christmas was the theme.
byu football dedicated. (porter works for the football team so they got some sweet hook-ups)
my mother and i went and helped carlie, her mom, her aunt, and her grandparents decorate monday the 1st.
it was inspiring.
admirable.
the true meaning of christmas radiates from that event.
it was incredible to see all the work that goes in to that event.
hours- not only of decorating the tree itself, but hours and hours of prep work.
there are teeny specific things each person much follow so the trees can be delivered and shown in pristine condition.
every ornament, light, or other random fixture must be wired to the tree.
then there are other details that i didn't even look into- so. much. unselfish. work.
people donate so much money and time-
and then even more people donate even more money by buying all the items.
all for children.
we checked out a few of the trees the day we decorated, but i knew mary would love it- so we went back wednesday.
mares was sick- so she didn't take to it as much as i know she would have had she been well.
it was still magical.
i was really awestruck at how beautiful everything was.
made even more beautiful by the spirit of it all.
makes me want to be a better person.
give more.
do more.
sacrifice more.
think of others more.
every christmas should include a visit to an event like this.
i learned another lesson on the true spirit of christmas-
and it was lovely relearning.
a few pictures from the inspired event:
*because i'm a sheep man's daughter*
*my favorite "tree"*
ice cream on ice cream on ice cream- flawless
awesomest tree award- they even had tots... and every other napoleon dynamite thing you could think of.
uber respect for my bro's tree.
*a few other awesome trees*
then my favorite part-
the gingerbread houses....
holy holiday-
candy creations of epic proportions
then frozen happened in a big way
i couldn't help but fall in love with this.
merriest of christmas seasons.
