governor's island

on august 11th we took the ferry to governor's island
at $2 round trip you can't find a more reasonable means of transportation.
governor's island is seasonally open
it lies just off the southern tip of manhattan
there's no cars allowed on this rather odd island
pedestrian freedom is #1
from 10-12 on weekdays they let you rent bikes for 1 hr for free
that was one of our main reasons for going
free bike rentals-
a strange island-
a city escape-
plus there's a hammock area-
there were lot's of areas that were under construction (on account of hurricane sandy) so biking included a lot of u-turns and dead ends but it was a lovely outing.
here's some pics
mares being mini animal entertained on the ferry
that brooklyn bridge in the background tho.
quite the introduction mr. or mrs. island
 i could own that
and sip lemonade and live the rest of my days in 100% bliss
made me feel a little like i was in the south for some reason

 a teeny florist
makes my heart swoon
wherever there are trees canopying a street/sidewalk/walkway
i want to be at that place
so "free" bikes weren't inclusive of bikes with child seats
so we did this instead...
just kidding- we just got one bike and took turns riding around the island
mares was in tot heaven when we let her sit like this for a few moments though
it was quite possibly the cutest thing i've ever seen
the skirt made it a bit tricky to be a crazy biker
i should have thought about that prior to our trip
oh well i was real fancy free on my ride-about
 then there's this hammock grove
we spent most of our time here-
 teeny wind blown hammocker
they had a strange mini golf course
we checked that out for sure- although we didn't golf
they had some aids quits on display on this lawn
it was really quite beautiful from afar
to see probably a hundred or so quilts adorning this grassy area with the city in the background
plus there were views like this
it was quite the adventure.
we decided once was probably good enough for us in it's current condition
it would have been more fun to bike around together and take mares with us- but.... $$$
i really would like to see it after they renovate it
i'm pretty sure there is supposed to be a beach- which would have been incredible.
views of the statue of liberty and the manhattan skyline from a beach really can't be topped.
this governor's island is really a fine place for a break from the city- it's all relaxation out there.

we are off to boston for a few days.
(we have ourselves a free place to stay.... we couldn't help ourselves.)
hope this week finds all of you well.
