4th of july nyc style

i have been away for quite some time. (so i will be doing major catch-up journaling/blogging)
with flight cancellations and hurricanes brewing on the coast i was really nervous i wouldn't make it back to america for its birthday.
but i did.
it couldn't have been a finer day for a family reunion.
our flight got in around 3, we got to the apartment at 4:30ish, and we were headed to a firework extravaganza at 6:30ish.
prior to our departure my parents treated us to a picnic pick-up at the local deli.
when we got to the subway station things were already crazy.
we decided to split up to try to increase our chances of getting on.
dale and i got on- i turn to find my parents and, well, they aren't on.
i did a desperate arm in door attempt to get it to open but only received a smashed arm.
sooo i gave them a cheery wave and a shoulder shrug and hoped they made it to the firework show.

ok i may have text my sister precise directions after our parting but it was a bit sketchy for a second.
when we arrived at our "destination" the subway was so packed with people we had to wait in line to get up the stairs.
then once we got up the initial flight of stairs there was only an elevator exit or an 8 story walk-up in a sweltering stairwell.
8 story walk-up in near death heat with a child and a stroller- yes please!
when that exit door came it was like early fourth of july fireworks.

then we proceeded to our destination.
we met up with dale's sister, brother-in-law, and nephew.
scouted out a spot
and let's let the pictures tell the rest of the story.
mary favors picnic lunches.
especially of the hogi variety.
 but her priority is candy.
we thought we had snagged some pretty sweet seats.
after a run-in with the plastic police.... because apparently grass instantly dies if you put a raincoat on it so it's necessary to hire a force to prevent such instant tragedy.
our entourage relaxed in the finest view of brooklyn bridge while dale did danger tricks with the kids.
 reunited=heaven
to maintain our attention they had random boats pass by that did a sweet water shoot out.
they also had a patrol boat swing around a few times showing off his lights and speed.
 mary found her own entertainment.
 then the show began.
and this happened.
which caused all of us to do this.
 and be awed by that.
plus be surprised they kept doing this.
and we couldn't stop being repeatedly impressed.
i had a tour guide fail.
we didn't have the sweetest of spots for the show.
a lot of the big in the sky fireworks were blocked by the bridge,
but i've never seen anything like this in my life.
50,000 pounds of fireworks.
25 minutes of day at night.
showered down over (and from) the brooklyn bridge and illuminated the downtown manhattan skyscrapers in bursts of shimmering colors.
you know how there is a grand finale in ever firework show?
it felt like every moment was the last one and then they repeatedly outdid themselves.
magic set off in the sky for america's day-
it was an epic ending to an epic few weeks with my family.
it was one of those moments in my life where it couldn't possible be real.
surrounded by family, watching something magical, and frankly i can't believe it.
i can't believe life happened like it did last night.
and i'm grateful for something so unreal becoming a reality on a day like the 4th of july.

hope everyone had a magical 4th.
what an unreal, and blessed reality america is.
what an unreal, and blessed reality life is.
