scone, peter rabbit, and a whole lot of scotland

after spending a lovely evening in inverness we continued our onward trek.
a whole lot of driving lay before us- a whole lot.
to break up the monotony of roadways my mother had strategically planned stop overs here and there.
first on the list- at the recommendation of the greatest aunt alive aunt lyn- was dunkeld.
we did some shopping here.
this was my favorite town in all of scotland.
dunkeld has the nicest people i met all trip.
the antique store clerk gave me some needlework patterns and inspired me with her kind words.
at the second hand church store the woman gave me a lion, "take this back to your girl- from me."
nicest people, cutest shops, perfectly quaint city set up- it was all over great; my favorite.
 cue dunkeld swooning
besides all that;
a little sign kept popping up that caught my attention: beatrix potter garden....
before there was harry potter and crew- there was peter rabbit and the gang.
i may or may not have forced our whole entourage to take a wee walk in the garden.
teeny tiny statues each in their respective storybook animal element.... adorable.
plus a gift shop- i was way to excited about buying mary a peter rabbit book in the beatrix potter gift shop.
after a trip down childhood memory lane we had a light local smoked salmon lunch and headed onward.

next was this castle in scone
here is where scottish royalty was crowned for years and years
the grounds had a bit of everything
massive trees
a maze
peacocks...
long paths with arches made of trees
i could really get use to living in a castle (i mean if the option were available).
 where the crowning took place
ever since a run-in with a peacock from my childhood i've been a bit leery of this fowl (/foul...).
 parents after successful navigation.
ok it may be shallow of me, but, in my opinion, this was the castle highlight-
a hedged maze!?!
i never.
dear scone,
may i move in?
xo mo
we still had plenty of adventuring in store for this day.
next was a visit to dunfermline
dunfermline is where robert the bruce is buried.
also.... it's the birthplace of andrew carnegie.
so dunfermline has some celebrity power.
we were unable to go inside the abbey because they were doing a special procession.
we got to watch the procession.
it was a special service for direct descendants of robert the bruce.
there was a bagpipe band, so, what more can you really ask for.
next to the abbey are old ruins of the dunfermline castle.
people back then really mastered architecture.
 then there was the abbey
top spires that included king robert bruce spelled out
bagpipes may be my favorite instrument.
it would really be a dream come true to learn how to play them.
 abbey, old castle, and bagpipes
champion scotland trio
the birthplace of andrew carnegie was closed. (we went and saw it another day)
man he was the man though- right?
 after dunfermline, there was stirling.
on this evening there just happened to be a free bagpipe festival.
we couldn't deny ourselves.
the trek to the castle was impressive.
there were a lot of people walking up the hill to the castle grounds.
my mom said we could pay to park just right by the castle.
we just drove right up, and surprise! free parking!
this view
hundreds of bagpipes congregated in the shadow of stirling castle
kilts plus big band mixed with bagpipes- flare that deserves respect.
seeing these familiar flags flying made me burst wide open with american pride.
second on the list of favorite instruments= accordions.
a whole marching band of them was beyond great.
how stirling castle looks from afar.
today was crazy with activities.
bagpipes.... now every time i hear them in the streets of nyc i reminisce a bit about scotland.
following the evening bagpipe festival/parade (because they marched from the castle down to the valley) we drove into edinburgh for dinner.
a wee taste of edinburgh was all i needed to make me want more.
it was really late when we arrived so we didn't see much of anything but it felt like harry potter.....
this was the 27th of june, the 28th is the date of the event that got my mom's travel wheels turning.
more on that later.

things are looking up around here- strep is on the quick decline.
more modern day posts to follow a few more united kingdom love posts.
hope tuesday found you all well.
happy july everyone!
