president grant's tomb
awhile back we high tailed it north to some fine sites.
sometimes all you have to do is go a few blocks and a new world awaits.
we decided to partake in such a new world.
this one included president grant's tomb.
i felt like i had been transported to the great capital of the united states.
what a fine resting place for such a phenomenal american citizen-
some very interesting facts:
-grant's funeral include over 60,000 marchers and took over 5 hours to pass.
-over 1 million people witnessed his funeral.
-construction didn't start on the tomb until 6 years after his death.
-completed in 1897
-largest mausoleum in north america
-the exterior has more than 8,000 tons of granite.
-it was built via public donations.
-which was the largest public fundraising event to date.
-there are no public restrooms because mrs. grant requested there be none at her final resting place.
