the green-wood cemetery
today we took a small "roadtrip" if you will- via underground tunnels and a subway....
such long subway rides call for massive amounts of fruit snacks and other sugar.
-aka rather poor parenting- you're welcome random subway riding citizen.
so we road that D train to 36th and with few crazy mary moments we arrived at our destination.
i was under the impression we would have to walk a ways from the subway stop, but luck was on our side, and that subway nearly dropped us off at the front door.
i love old cemeteries.
it may be a bit creepy but the historian in me loves them- plus there is a reverent feel at such places that can't be matched.
it's the last monument left to a human being and small or large it can say a great deal about someone.
we wandered the grounds of this grand cemetery.
here are a few interesting facts:
-founded in 1838
-one of America's 1st
-by 1860 half a million people/year visited the cemetery- rivaling niagra falls.
-helped inspire the creation of central park
-478 acres
-560,000 people are buried here
-revolutionary war historic site
-2006 marked its induction into the national historic landmark club
-horace greeley, louis comfort tiffany, henry chadwick (father of baseball), jean-michel basquiat, and laura keene (witnessed lincoln assassination) among other historical notables are buried here.
here are a few pictures of this lovely resting place.
